What are porcelain crowns?

Thanks to advances in porcelain, crowns are now stronger and more natural-looking than ever, making them the top choice for restoring damaged teeth. Teeth affected by root canals, grinding, decay, or fractures are more likely to break under everyday stress. A doctor-prescribed porcelain crown surrounds your tooth completely, giving it full protection and restoring both strength and appearance.

What does a porcelain crown do?

Crowns are full-coverage restorations designed to protect teeth that are at risk of breaking or are too damaged for a traditional filling. When you receive a crown, you’ll notice it can:

• Strengthen a heavily restored tooth to help prevent future fractures

• Restore tooth structure lost from grinding or wear

Two visits
1st appointment

At your first crown appointment at Midtown Toronto Dental, we will give local anesthesia for the tooth being treated. Dr. Yoo will then prepare the tooth conservatively to create room for the porcelain crown. After careful assessment of the shape and contour, a 3D scan or impression of the tooth will then be taken. This imprint will allow the lab ceramist to create a porcelain crown that looks and feels like your natural tooth.

A temporary crown will then be made, polished and cemented. During the next 1-2 weeks, you’ll want to avoid sticky foods near the treated tooth, so the temporary crown stays put. If the temporary crown dislodges, try to replace it and come visit us if you can’t get it back in. The purpose of a temporary crown is to protect you from sensitivity and to keep the adjacent teeth from shifting even a little bit.

2nd appointment

At your second visit, we’ll remove the temporary crown and try in your final porcelain crown to make sure it looks and fits perfectly. If the crown is in the esthetic zone, our highly skilled ceramicist will do custom chairside staining to make sure the crown looks and matches beautifully next to your other teeth. Once everything feels just right, we’ll bond it securely to your tooth and clean away any excess cement. Before you leave, we’ll go over easy care tips so you can keep your new crown looking and feeling great.
