Dental Exam & Cleaning

Healthy teeth are priceless — decay and infections can be costly, and bad breath is embarrassing!

Stay ahead with regular dental cleanings and check-ups.

The accumulation of plaque and calculus around the teeth and under the gums can cause a cascade of dental problems like cavities, gingivitis, bone loss, halitosis (bad breath), and eventually, tooth loss. Routine cleanings at Midtown Dental Toronto rid the mouth of harmful bacteria and set you up on a good routine to enjoy a healthy mouth.

What is a Dental Exam & Cleaning?

A dental exam and cleaning appointment removes plaque and calculus (also known as tartar) from the teeth and along the gumline. This preventative care helps reduce the risk of cavities, gingivitis, bone loss, and bad breath.

We typically recommend professional cleanings 2, 3, or 4 times per year, depending on your individual oral health needs. Dental exams are generally recommended twice a year. Together, exams and cleanings play an essential role in both preventing dental problems and maintaining long-term oral health.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as persistent bad breath, visible plaque buildup, gum inflammation, discomfort, or tooth decay, we strongly encourage you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

During the Dental Exam and Cleaning Procedure

At Midtown Toronto Dental, we begin with a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums to develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your individual oral health needs. Your exam includes low-radiation digital x-rays to detect decay between the teeth, to assess the jaw bones, and to provide a complete picture of your overall oral health.

We thoroughly measure your gums and perform an oral cancer screening as part of our commitment to early detection and prevention. During your cleaning, our hygienists use a combination of hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler to carefully and effectively remove plaque and tartar buildup from above and below the gumline.

Before you leave, our team will review personalized home-care recommendations to help you maintain a healthy smile between visits - making future cleanings easier, more comfortable, and more efficient.

After the Dental Exam and Cleaning

Following your visit, you may experience mild temporary side effects such as bleeding, swelling, redness, and discomfort. These commonly occur due to addressing hard-to-reach areas in the mouth. Since your side effects should be very mild, you are free to enjoy the rest of your day as usual. To maintain your dental hygiene afterward, follow your hygienist’s recommendations on flossing and brushing your teeth twice daily.
