Dental pain is no joke. Let’s review what is and isn’t a dental emergency.

Dental Trauma

Dental trauma can cause sudden problems that require emergency care. If a permanent tooth is knocked out due to injury, Dr. Yoo recommends gently handling the tooth by the crown (not the root), lightly rinsing it if it appears to have debris, and - if possible - placing it back into the socket in the correct position as soon as you can.

Replacing the tooth within 30 minutes significantly increases the chances of saving it and preventing further complications. If reinsertion isn’t possible, store the tooth in saliva (such as inside the cheek) or in milk. Do not wait longer than two hours to be seen by an emergency dental professional—these injuries require immediate attention. A broken tooth may also be considered to be a dental emergency.

If you are experiencing a severe toothache, please come into or call our office as soon as possible. We’ll do everything we can to see you the same day.

Dental Abscess

Dental abscess is a dental emergency and should be treated immediately. Dental swellings could spread and become dangerous if not treated properly, causing severe pain and further complications.

Broken Cusp of a Molar

Unless you’re in extreme pain, a broken cusp of a molar is not a dental emergency. For these cases, we will book you at our next available spot and offer recommendations for over the counter pain relief to alleviate pain if needed.

What To Expect

To accurately evaluate the issue, an x-ray of the affected area, along with a 15-30 minute examination, is necessary. During this time, Dr. Yoo will assess your dental situation and provide a clear treatment plan to help restore your comfort and address the problem effectively.
